Frequently Asked Questions

Working in a reputable international school is a very rewarding experience. It will broaden your skill set and enable you to grow both professionally and personally. You will be given CPD and the opportunity to work with like-minded teachers from around the world, sharing ideas and best practice and being given the opportunity to diversify and expand your teaching repertoire. Extensive facilities and enthusiastic students make the role of an international teacher extremely fulfilling.

Ask yourself what is motivating you to work internationally? From there, be thorough in your research to make sure the school you accept reflects your values and ethos. We pride ourselves on working with schools which offer a positive, healthy work environment where student and teacher well-being is at the heart of the school.

ITS will help in your research and questioning and will connect you with teachers already in the school so that you can hear first-hand experience about school life and the local area before accepting a position.

We will also take you through the contract step by step to ensure you fully understand the contractual agreement before signing.

There are many factors to consider when looking at salary and it depends on school and country. There is no set rule and so we advise candidates to compare their disposable income rather than gross salary as this figure will determine your quality of life and savings opportunities.

Our schools offer housing allowance or accommodation, annual flights, medical insurance, and many offer children’s education and paid utility bills, as well as bonuses.

We discuss the salary and package offered with each opportunity we present to you so that you are fully informed when considering your options.

All applicants are required to hold a Bachelors’ degree and teaching certification such as QTS or PGCE. Many countries require your degree to match your teaching subject if you are teaching Y7-13.

Our schools are predominantly British, American or IB curriculum and accredited with internationally recognised education agencies. With inspection rating from ‘Good’ to ‘Outstanding’, we are very proud to work with some of the leading international schools across the globe.

If you join at the beginning of the academic year, new staff are provided with a week or two-week induction programme which includes;

  •  An allocated buddy to connect with before you arrive
  •  Being met at the airport by a school representative
  •  Assistance in finding an apartment (if school accommodation is not provided)
  •  Setting up bank / phone accounts / car hire
  •  In-school training prior to the start of term
  •  Social events
  •  Visa support

Our schools know how important it is to get you settled so that you are refreshed and ready on the first day of term to meet your students and parents.

The peak recruitment season tends to be from November– May but many schools recruit across the year so you can apply any time. Upon registering with ITS we will make sure your profile and documentation is complete and ready to send to potential employers and we will be in regular correspondence with you to discuss potential opportunities.

Once registered with ITS, we will support you through every step of the process, from understanding the types of schools available, packages, locations, interview preparation, cost of living comparisons through to connecting you with teachers already abroad and giving guidance to ensure you choose the right opportunity for you.

ITS candidate applications are seen by our Head Teachers as quickly as possible, as they trust that the candidates ITS present to them are of a high calibre and will be an asset to their school.

ITS has an excellent success rate of employees being promoted early in their contract with a school. Many of our schools are over 1500 students, and international teachers tend to move every few years, which generates many more opportunities for development.

You can, although we would always recommend choosing the right job and school rather than restricting yourself to one location as this will ensure you will secure the best school for your experience, values and ethos.

These vary by country and ITS can advise on specific countries upon your registration.

Headteachers look for innovative and inspiring teachers and leaders who are passionate and committed to creating a stimulating and progressive environment where students can be challenged, supported and ultimately flourish.

Schools tend to have more holidays than state schools in the UK with longer summer breaks and more public holidays. The working day is generally the same but you start / finish earlier. You are generally expected to host a curricular activity once a week and attend meetings after school. Depending on the country, some schools are inspected annually, and this can put additional demands on teachers.

From broadening and improving your skill set, through to life experiences, making life-long friends, career enhancement and saving opportunities there are too many benefits to mention! Some teachers plan to only go overseas for a couple of years but continue their international career for 20+ years because there are so many types of schools to experience and locations to explore - the opportunities are endless and you will continue to evolve both personally and professionally.
